Stress Allowable for Weld Metal

Type of Weld Stress Permissible Stress
1. Complete Penetration Grooves Welds

(a) Tension normal to the effective throat

Same as base metal
(b) Compression normal to the effective throat Same as base metal
(c) Tension or compression parallel to the axis of the weld Same as base metal
(d) Shear on the effective throat

0.30 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.40 x yield stress of base metal.

Type of Weld Stress Permissible Stress
2. Partial Penetration Groove Welds

(a) Compression normal to effective throat

Designed not to bear - 0.50 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.60 x yield stress of base metal.
Designed to bear. Same as base metal.

(b) Tension or compression parallel to axis of the weld. Same as base metal.
(c) Shear parallel to axis of weld 0.30 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.40 x yield stress of base metal.
(d) Tension normal to effective throat 0.30 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.40 x yield stress of base metal.
Type of Weld Stress Permissible Stress
3. Fillet welds

(a) Stress on effective throat, regardless of direction of application of load.

0.30 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.40 x yield stress of base metal.
(b) Tension or compression parallel to axis of weld. Same as base metal.

4. Plug and Slot Welds

(a) Shear parallel to faying surfaces 0.30 x Nominal tensile strength of weld metal (ksi) except stress on base metal shall not exceed 0.40 x yield stress of base metal.
