Safety Recommendations for Gas Welding Gas Cylinders - Gas Cylinders
Gas cylinders must be prevented from sharp impact with one another or with the ground.  Acetylene cylinders must always be kept upright.  A cap must be fitted on the cylinder while it is not in use.  Cylinders should not be exposed to welding flame, direct sun light, water, etc.  Cylinders should be well fastened at their places so that they do not fall.  Cylinders should not be used as supports for heavy loads or as rollers for moving materials.
Cylinders should be stored in a well protected, well ventilated, dry location, well away from highly combustible materials such as oil or excelsior. One should not smoke at the place where gas cylinders have been stored. Cylinders containing acetylene and oxygen should be stored separately or quite far apart from each other.

Gas cylinders shall be so conveyed as not to project beyond the sides or ends of the vehicle. Adequate means shall be taken to prevent cylinders falling off from the vehicle carrying them.Do not use a hammer or wrench to open any valve on a cylinder. Cylinders should be moved by tilting and rolling them on their bottom edges. Dragging or sliding of cylinders should be avoided.

Cylinder valves shall be closed before moving cylinders.  Water, dirt, oil or grease should not be permitted to come in contact with oxygen cylinders, valves, regulators, hose or fittings. Do not handle oxygen cylinders with oily hands or oily gloves. Cylinder valves shall be closed when work is finished.

The cylinder valve shall be closed when the cylinder is empty. Cylinders shall not be kept at a place where they might become a part of the electrical circuit. Cylinders must not be cut up for scrap. The numbers and markings stamped on the gas cylinders shall not be tampered with. Never attempt to mix gases in a cylinder.
Do not tamper with the safety devices provided in cylinders or valves. Never tamper with nor attempt to repair gas cylinders or valves unless qualified to do so. Call acetylene by its full name acetylene and oxygen by its full name oxygen and not by the word gas. Never use oxygen or acetylene without proper pressure regulators.
Before connecting the pressure regulator to a cylinder valve, the valve shall be opened slightly and closed immediately. This action which is termed as cracking clears the valve of dirt or dust that otherwise might enter the pressure regulator. Stand to one side of the outlets while cracking.

Open cylinder valve slowly and let the cylinder key for opening valve remain on valve stem so that the cylinders may be quickly turned off if an emergency arises. To test for leaks a solution of soap and water may be brushed on the valve socket and gland nut. Bubbles indicate leakage. Should a leak occur, the valve should be closed and gland nut tightened. If this does not stop the leak, take the cylinder out in the open air, keeping away from fires or open lights and notify the supplier immediately.
An acetylene cylinder valve shall not be opened more than 1.5 turns of the spindle. Never use acetylene at pressures in excess of 15 psi (1.05 kg/cm2). A hammer or wrench shall not be used to open oxygen cylinder valve. If this is not possible to open the valve by hand, the supplier shall be notified. Frozen valves or regulators should be thawed with hot water and never by flame.
