Check ventilator intake pipes to see they are free of obstructions. Be especially careful in cold weather because some welding machine operators block ventilator openings to keep their workplace warmer. There is no health hazard from smoke and fumes generated during welding steel and ferrous alloys. |
| Carefully check suction tube or hood supports and structure. Look for leaks that may admit air from areas outside of the welding site. |

Where downdraft ventilation through a grille is used, look for pieces of electrodes and other working materials that may be lodged in air duct. |
| Check ventilating fan, motor and driving belts. See that fan discharges outdoors where fumes won't be injurious. |
| If heat in welding shop is oppressive, check entire ventilating system for leaks, obstructions and mechanical or electrical faults. |
