Trouble Shooting on Rotating Arc Welders -
Trouble Probable Cause Cure
Welder won't start Faulty starter Replace blown fuse; repair broken power lead; see that a.c. voltage is right for the unit; close open main power switch; look for trip ped overload relay, cool machine, correct overloading and repair damaged Starter button circuit operating coil or contactor.
Faulty motor Tighten loose motor connection; repair open circuit in windings; see that motor is connected correctly; repair rotor, bearings and stator if damaged.
Welder doesn't give enough current Faulty generator Check commutator, brushes and brush springs. Replace worn or damaged parts. Tighten ground connection and see that ground you are using is suitable. Check field and exciter current and field rheostat.
Welder overloaded See that leads aren't too long or too small; check air temperature around welder (reduce load if air temp. is over l00°F); check ventilation openings; repair or replace overheated parts of overload relay.
Welder won't supply any current Generator troubles See that brushes, exciter and commutator are OK; check direction of rotation (should be same as on machine frame marking); check polarity if unit runs in parallel with others.
Faulty welding circuit Check terminal for short, wrong size, length of cable; unit grounded.
