Gas Welders Maintenance

Gas Welders Maintenance - Maintenance of these units requires more care than other types because damage to pressure parts can result in serious trouble.
Once a Day Inspect oxygen and gas piping and manifolds. Oxygen pressure usually ranges from 50 to 100 psi and the piping system and manifolds for it are different from those for acetylene which is supplied at a pressure not greater than 15 psi.
Check the pressure regulators at the blowpipe stations. Pressure gage fitted with a hypodermic needle is excellent for checking oxygen and gas pressure in hoses leading to blowpipe. If you have one of these on hand, check hose pressures once a day.
Check acetylene regulator or hydraulic flash arrestor every day. Flash arrestor prevents passage of oxygen into acetylene lines and must be kept in topnotch condition at all times.
Inspect oxygen and acetylene shutoff valves for leakage. Listen to the operation of the mechanical check valve on the acetylene line. You should be able to hear it click open and shut.
Once a Month

Check every pressure gage and regulator in the system against an accurate test gage. Replace defective gages and regulators with new or reconditioned ones.

Use a soap solution to detect leak in oxygen and acetylene pipes. Apply solution to suspected leak; soap will bubble if any gas is escaping from pipe. Perform daily and monthly inspections on a year round basis.

Our remarks will be confined to low and medium pressure systems because these are the most common types that are used today.
