Hand Shields and Helmets

Hand Shields and Helmets - Hand shield is a protective device, used in arc welding, for shielding and protecting the face and neck of the operator. A hand shield is held in the hand of the welder and is equipped with a suitable filter lens. Helmet is a protective device used in arc welding, for shielding and protecting the face and neck of the welder.
A helmet is designed to be worn on the head of the operator and it is equipped with a suitable filter lens. The use of hand shields and helmets during welding is extremely essential to protect operator's eyes from getting damaged due to ultraviolet and infrared rays of the welding arc. A handshield or helmet consists of the following:

(i) Face shield which is made up of fibre and is formed in a shape so as to cover the front half of the head.
(ii) An opening at the level of eyes to provide visibility. The opening is approximately 100 x 50 mm. It contains three components starting from the side of the welder.

(a) The first is expensive good grade of colored arc welding filter lens that removes approximately 99.5% of the Infrared rays (that can cause painful injury to the eyes) and 99.75% of the ultraviolet rays (that can burn the skin). The lenses have different shade numbers and different welding processes need a different lens shade number. For example No. 10* is the common shade used for welding with covered electrodes.

(b) Next to welding lens is another lens of double strength glass and is used to protect the inner or more expensive welding lens from metal spatter etc. To improve visibility, it may be replaced from time to time.
(c) Many times another clear lens is put on the face side of the helmet to protect welding lens from that side also.

(iii) A hand shield is fitted with a handle which the welder can hold in his one hand, whereas a helmet is fitted with a head-band so that the welder can wear the helmet on his head.

Helmets are fitted with a swing mounting so that the welder can lift a part of the helmet above his face without removing the head band from his head.

Some helmets are fitted with air hose to supply fresh air to the welder. An advantage associated with helmet is that it leaves both hands of the welder free for welding purposes. A hand shield is frequently used by an observer or a person who does welding only for a short period.
